Due to his recent poor play, Virat Kohli, the former captain of India, has been questioned about his position on the national squad. The right-handed batter had a mediocre performance in the most recent Indian Premier League (IPL), and his slump persisted during the current tour of England.
While many believed Kohli may rediscover some rhythm in the ODIs, the talismanic cricketer was sidelined due to a groin issue. Kohli struggled with the bat in the rescheduled Test and the T20Is. With the newcomers putting on a spectacular performance, opinions are rising from all sides criticising Kohli’s poor play.
Had Not Imagined Virat Kohli Would Go Through Such Lean Patch: Syed Kirmani
India’s 1983 World Cup champion Syed Kirmani expressed his thoughts on the matter, saying that while he has never seen a player as reliable as Kohli, he is equally astounded by how difficult it is for him to recover from a slump.
“I said when he (Virat Kohli) was scoring consistently, a prolific scorer. He has been successful in all the three formats. I said I have never seen such a consistent player during my era,” the ex-India wicketkeeper noted during a chat with Sports Yaari.
“And him going through a lean patch for such a long time is something I had not imagined. Such a world class batsman cannot be in such a bad form,” he added.
Virat Kohli Needs To be Selected In The World Cup: Syed Kirmani
Just months out from the T20 World Cup, Kirmani also gave his opinion on Kohli, saying that the former captain of India “has to be picked” for the squad.
“But he needs to be selected in the World Cup because he’s a role model, very aggressive, motivational and the team needs such experienced players. Because it should be a blend between youth and experience so that the youngsters get to learn while communicating,” he added.
