Shikhar Dhawan will captain Team India in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, marking his eagerly anticipated return to international cricket for the first time since August.

Currently, the left-handed batsman exclusively plays for the ODI squad. Prior to the 2021 T20 World Cup, he lost his spot in the T20I team and was released from the Test team in 2018.

Dhawan is still a regular contributor to the 50-over team and is anticipated to open the 2023 World Cup. When the usual captain is absent, he leads Team India on the way to the ICC competition, and Dhawan will once more assume the captain’s hat.

Dhawan is on the verge of completing 12000 runs in List A cricket as he prepares to take the field for the opening ODI against New Zealand. In 296 games, the left-handed batter has scored 11953 runs. 30 centuries and 66 half-centuries are included in his total.

His batting average over his career is 44.43. Dhawan, who debuted in List A in 2004, is still playing well in the 50-over format. In 161 ODIs, the seasoned batsman has scored 6672 runs.

Shikhar Dhawan’s ODI debut came against Australia in 2010:

In 2010, he made his ODI debut against Australia. Between 2010 and 2013, he was in and out of Team India, only settling in for the Champions Trophy. Interestingly, Rohit Sharma became a permanent member of the ODI team during the same tournament, and the duo continues to begin the innings for the Men in Blue.

If Dhawan surpasses the 12000-run milestone, he will do so before Rohit. The Indian skipper needs a few more games to join the list of all-time 50-over runs scorers, which stands at 11618. Graham Gooch is at the top of the list with 22211 runs in 613 games. Graeme Hick, who finished with 22059 runs in 651 games, is next in line. In 551 games, Sachin Tendulkar scored 21999 runs, placing him third overall.
