A new sixer king entered the international stage during the second One Day International (ODI) in the three-match series between India and the West Indies.
Axar Patel, a bowling all-rounder known for making pivotal cameos with the willow in the Indian Premier League (IPL), demonstrated his batting prowess in the 50-over format on Sunday during the series finale against the West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval.
Axar Patel Breaks MS Dhoni’s Record
Axar has broken a long-standing record of the former Indian captain, who was infamously tortured by him in the IPL.
All-rounder Axar smashed a game-winning half-century for the Shikhar Dhawan-led team at the Oval to cap off India’s thrilling run-chase against the Men from the Caribbean in the second ODI.
In the recently finished match between the two former world champions, Axar scored 64* off just 35 balls while hitting five sixes. Axar put the icing on the cake for India by smashing a huge six to seal India’s exciting victory over the Men from the Caribbean in the series finale.
Axar owns the distinction for smoking the most maximums by an Indian hitter batting at No. 7 or lower during a successful run chase in ODI cricket, with five sixes in his career-best innings.
In India’s victorious run chase against Zimbabwe in 2005, Dhoni hit three sixes. Dhoni’s feat had been repeated twice in 2011 against South Africa and Ireland by former Indian all-rounder Yusuf Pathan.
India Completes Series Win
The second ODI saw Shikhar Dhawan’s India dominate the West Indies thanks to Axar’s game-winning innings. India’s exciting two-wicket victory has prolonged the hosts’ dismal streak in the 50-over competition.
Additionally, India has a commanding 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. For his outstanding batting performance, all-arounder Axar was awarded the Player of the Match. Wednesday’s third ODI between India and the West Indies will go place.
