Indian batter Shreyas Iyer is hopeful of scoring a century in the final ODI against West Indies after missing out on two occasions with fifty in each innings. Iyer scored 63 off 71 balls in India’s chase of 312.
India No.3 played the role of an anchor in his 99-run stand with wicketkeeper Sanju Samson (54) for the fourth wicket. Iyer didn’t go after the big shots except for the one against Kyle Mayers, dispatching over the long-off stands for a six.
I could have taken the team through easily: Shreyas Iyer
Before Iyer could go along in his alliance with Samson, West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph pinned the batter for leg before wicket in front. Iyer, who scored 54 in the first ODI, rued the manner of his dismissal and will search for the three-figure mark in the next game.
“I was really happy with the score which I got today but really unhappy with the way I was dismissed. I thought I could have taken the team through easily but very unfortunate with the wicket. Hopefully, I score a century in the next game,” Iyer said in the post-match press conference.
“We lost two back-to-back wickets for 60 and from there we had to rebuild. Sanju came in and showed a lot of intent. I was already batting and had faced around 20 balls. So, me and Sanju knew what we had to do. Sanju faced a few balls and then he took on to the spinners,” he added.
Axar Patel’s knock was outstanding: Shreyas Iyer
Indian all-rounder Axar Patel played spectacular innings of 64 not out to guide the tourists past the finishing line with two balls left in the match. Axar pummelled three fours and five sixes, striking at 182.86, to pull off the game under West Indies’ belt.
“It was fun, to be honest. We all were sitting together and Rahul sir was getting tensed. He was passing on the message. But yeah, I think a lot of players showed really good emotions out there. They were really calm and composed during the pressure situations,” Shreyas said.
“Since we have played so many games now, so we have seen such emotions and it was just a normal game for us. I think we did pretty well, especially Axar. Outstanding knock,” he added.
India have already sealed the three-match series 2-0 and they will play the final ODI against Nicholas Pooran & co on Wednesday (July 22) at Queen’s Park Oval.
