Salman Butt, a former cricketer, recently asserted that India could have scored significantly more runs than they did in the opening ODI of the series against the West Indies on Friday (July 22).

Butt discussed how the middle order failed to build on the strong start given by players like Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer on his YouTube channel.

“In light of the strong start the openers provided, India ought to have scored a lot more runs. Despite Shreyas Iyer scoring a half-century, the hitters that came in to bat could not have a big enough impact” Salman Butt Said.

The Men in Blue scored 308 runs in the ODI after being allowed to bat first. Shikhar Dhawan, the team’s captain, had the best batting performance with a score of 97.

The former Pakistani captain Salman Butt continued by saying that the outcome of the ODI match’s final overs was debatable. He stated that the West Indies had the strength to win such run-chases.

Salman Butt claimed that despite the Indian bowlers’ best efforts to contain the flow of runs, the home team was able to pick up speed in the final few overs. He emphasized how the batters kept scoring important runs despite losing crucial wickets.

“Off the final ball, West Indies needed to score five runs. In a situation like that, everything is possible, especially when playing a team like the West Indies.

“Early wickets were lost, but they managed to put up a lot of runs in the final few overs. The Indian bowlers made an effort to stop them, but in the end, the game came down to the wire.”

In the end, Shikhar Dhawan and company managed to win by a slim margin of three runs and take a 1-0 lead in the ODI series. The second match between the two teams is scheduled for this coming Sunday, July 24.
