West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran got out just when he was opening his hands and big shots were flowing from his bat as he was clean bowled by India’s Shardul Thakur in the ongoing second ODI of the three-match series being played at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad on July 24, 2022.
Pooran had done well at the toss, calling correctly to win the coin toss, and then decided to bat first. Both West Indies and India made one change each. For the home side, it was a forced change as Gudakesh Motie was ruled out of the remainder of the series due to a fractured thumb and he was replaced by Hayden Walsh Jr.
For India, Prasidh Krishna was left out and Avesh Khan made his ODI debut.
West Indies started well with Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers taking the attack to Indian bowlers, Mayers was especially severe on debutant Avesh Khan and was dismissed by Deepak Hooda on his first ball of the match, after scoring 39 in 23 balls with 6 fours and 1 six.
Shamarh Brooke then made 35 before falling to Axar Patel, caught in slips by Shikhar Dhawan. In the next over, Dhawan took another catch, this time off Yuzvendra Chahal to send Brandon King back for a duck.
Nicholas Pooran And Shai Hope Bring West Indies Back Into The Game
Then captain Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope got together and build a partnership that benefitted the West Indies most. The duo added 117 runs in 126 balls for the 4th wicket before Pooran fell. Before that, both the batters had made their half-centuries.
In fact, Nicholas Pooran had started to open his arms and had hit Chahal for two sixes and was looking good to take West Indies to a good total. However, after making 74 in 77 balls with 1 four and 6 sixes, Pooran was foxed by Shardul Thakur.
On the 4th ball of the 44th over, Pooran tried to hit Shardul for a boundary by moving across the his stumps towards the off-side. However, Thakur bowled the ball on the leg stump and Pooran had gone too far towards off to make contact and the ball clattered into his leg-stump, ending his dangerous innings.
