Aakash Chopra disagrees with the selectors’ decision to name KL Rahul as Team India’s skipper for the ODI series against Zimbabwe in replacement of Shikhar Dhawan.

Three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between the Men in Blue and the African nation will be contested, with the first match scheduled for August 18. Rahul’s availability for the tour was questionable, therefore Dhawan was initially selected as captain.

However, after the Indian vice-captain was added to the team, Dhawan was replaced as captain by the Karnataka batter.

In a video posted to his YouTube account, Aakash Chopra was questioned about whether Rahul taking Dhawan’s place as captain for the Zimbabwe series could have been avoided. He responded:

“You have my complete support. I would have stayed away from it if it had been in my hands. KL Rahul has already been named to the Asia Cup roster despite not previously being a member of this team. I am aware that he is the vice-captain at the moment, but there are currently eight to ten captains on this team.”

‘Shikhar Dhawan is a senior guy’: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra believes Rahul might have joined the team as a batsman only. He noticed:

“Shikhar Dhawan is a senior guy; he served as captain; it makes no difference if you let him stay. KL Rahul is also able to play only as a batsman because it is irrelevant whether or not you are the skipper.”

Aakash Chopra reiterated that Dhawan may have remained the captain in his conclusion. a well-known commentator said:

“Shikhar may have been continued. I concur with you that Shikhar Dhawan was named captain, so you should keep him in place. It does not matter; this is simply my perspective.”

Given that the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants has not been available since the IPL 2022, the selection committee’s decision to include Rahul in the squad for the ODIs against Zimbabwe appears to have been a wise one.
