Ahead of the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the BCCI has introduced a new set of rules. The highly-anticipated IPL 2024 is scheduled to get underway on Friday (March 22) with the game between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai.

One of the new rules will see bowlers being able to bowl two bouncers in an over. Previously, the bowlers were allowed to deliver just one short ball in an over. The BCCI first introduced the two-bouncer rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) earlier in the 2023-24 domestic season. In international cricket, the bowlers cannot deliver more than one short delivery per over.

New rules in IPL 2024:

Apart from the two bouncers in an overrule, the BCCI has also decided to maintain the rule of verifying a catch when a referral is requested for stumping during IPL 2024 matches. In January this year, the ICC changed the rule and according to it, the umpires now only assess side-on replays for stumping during Decision Review System (DRS) referrals, not the possibility of caught-behind dismissals.

The teams will also have the option to review wides and no balls in addition to retaining two reviews. The rule allowing the teams to review the wides and no-balls was introduced last year. In addition to that, the IPL also introduced the Impact Player rule last year.

In another big call, the BCCI has decided against implementing the ICC’s new stop clock rule. To ensure that the games are completed on time, the ICC has introduced the rule for white-ball games. According to the new rule, the bowling team will have to start a new over within 60 seconds of the completion of the previous over.

IPL 2024 will also see the introduction of the Smart Replay System. As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, the TV umpire will receive inputs directly from two Hawk-Eye operators who will be sitting in the same room as the umpire and provide him with images captured by Hawk-Eye’s eight high-speed cameras across the ground.
