Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) fast bowling coach, Morne Morkel, endorsed young pacer Mayank Yadav's promotion to the senior Indian team. Morne Morkel suggested that exposure to the Indian camp would be beneficial for Mayank Yadav's development in international cricket.
Mayank Yadav has impressed fans and experts with his express-pace bowling in the IPL 2024. The pacer has consistently bowled at speeds exceeding 150 kmph. He recently clocked 156.7 kmph against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, marking the fastest-recorded delivery of this season.
The 21-year-old made IPL history by securing consecutive Player of the Match awards in his first two matches. Mayank's stellar performance included taking three wickets for 27 runs against the Punjab Kings. In the subsequent game, he excelled further, recording bowling figures of 3/14.
I Can't See Why Not - Morne Morkel
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Morne Morkel recommended fast-tracking Mayank Yadav into the Indian team. Morkel suggested providing Mayank opportunities in T20 cricket to aid his development without putting excessive strain on his body.
“For me, the first thing you look at a fast bowler is the speed, then you look at consistency and he (Mayank) is bowling at around 150 plus. His strengths are making life uncomfortable for batters so when you have that x factor you have won that part of the deal. I can’t see why not, he spent some time in the Indian camp, getting used to the conditions, getting used to senior players and the team environment."
"When I was playing for South Africa one of the greatest things was young players coming into the squad early, gaining experience, playing in different countries, getting used to the conditions, keeping the high quality in training. If you can give him an opportunity in white ball cricket, T20 cricket, which is not taxing on his body it will be perfect,’’ Morkel said.
Morne Morkel and other experienced coaches back Mayank Yadav, foreseeing a bright future in Indian cricket due to his raw pace and dedication. The format of his debut, whether Test or T20, remains uncertain, but only time will reveal if he earns the coveted call-up to the national team.
We Need To Manage Mayank Yadav - Morne Morkel
The former fast bowler emphasized that the LSG team management closely monitors Mayank's workload. Morkel highlighted the importance of managing Mayank's workload, facilitating his recovery, and guiding him in establishing a suitable routine.
“Unfortunately last season he got injured. In the warm-up game, he bowed quickly and the whole team was excited for him. We need to manage him, look at his bowling loads, his recovery, educate him, and help him to find a routine that suits him,’’ added Morkel.
Lucknow Super Giants acquired him in 2022, despite having played only a few List A matches. He was expected to strengthen their bowling attack in 2023, but an injury sidelined him for the entire season. However, the Lucknow franchise retained him for the 2024 season.
Mayank Yadav will be next seen in action when the KL Rahul team faces the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, April 7. The LSG team is currently in fourth place in the standings with two wins out of three matches in the IPL 2024.
