The BCCI, on Tuesday (March 12), confirmed that fast-bowler Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the entire IPL 2024. The India pacer has not played a competitive game since the ODI World Cup final on November 19 last year.

Soon after the World Cup, he was sidelined with an ankle injury and missed the tour of South Africa as well as the recently concluded five-match Test series against England at home. Mohammed Shami played the World Cup through pain and took injections to treat his ankle.

In January, he had revealed he was experiencing “some stiffness” in his ankle but was confident of playing against England. However, his return was delayed after he visited the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for a reassessment. And last month, he had to undergo surgery on his ankle.

In its media release, the BCCI announced that Mohammed Shami underwent surgery on February 26 for his right heel problem and will not take part in the upcoming IPL.

“The fast bowler successfully underwent surgery on February 26th, 2024, for his right heel problem. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI medical team and is ruled out of the upcoming TATA IPL 2024,” stated the BCCI.

Mohammed Shami’s absence a big blow:

Mohammed Shami’s absence will be a huge blow for Gujarat Titans who have already lost the services of Hardik Pandya after trading him to Mumbai Indians in an all-cash deal. The right-arm pacer was a key reason behind Gujarat’s stunning performance in the last two seasons of the IPL. In IPL 2022, he picked up 20 wickets as the Titans went all the way in their maiden IPL season.

Last year, he finished the tournament as his team’s highest wicket-taker. Mohammed Shami picked up an impressive 28 wickets as the Titans qualified for the final again before losing the title decider against Chennai Super Kings. The Titans are expected to announce the replacement for the pacer soon.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if Mohammed Shami gets a place in the Indian team or not for the T20 World Cup in June. Shami was the standout performer with the ball in the ODI World Cup last year. He finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker, taking 24 wickets in just seven games.
