India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has undergone successful surgery on his Achilles tendon. The right-arm pacer himself delivered the news on Monday (February 26). Mohammed Shami has not played a competitive game since the final of the ODI World Cup on November 19. He had a stunning campaign in the World Cup as he played a key role in India’s dominant run in the competition before the heartbreaking loss in the final.

Despite not playing the first four games of the World Cup, he finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker. In seven games, he picked up 24 wickets with the help of a record three five-wicket hauls and one four-wicket haul. What makes his achievement even more impressive is that he played the World Cup matches with a heel injury.

As per reports, he took regular injections during the World Cup to represent the team. The 33-year-old has been sidelined since then and has now undergone a successful operation. On Monday, he took to X (formerly Twitter) to deliver an update on the surgery, writing:

“Just had a successful heel operation on my Achilles tendon! Recovery is going to take some time, but looking forward to getting back on my feet. #AchillesRecovery #HeelSurgery #RoadToRecovery.”

Mohammed Shami doubtful for IPL 2024:

According to reports, the surgery has ruled Mohammed Shami out of the upcoming season of the IPL. Even if he manages to recover, he is likely to miss the majority of games for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024, scheduled to be played from March 22 to May 26. The surgery could also jeopardize his participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in June.

The selectors might decide against picking him in the squad due to lack of game time. Missing Mohammed Shami will be a huge blow for Gujarat Titans. The pacer played a key role in the franchise’s stunning performances in the last two seasons of the IPL. In 2022, Shami picked up 20 wickets as the Titans went on to win the IPL in their maiden season before taking 28 wickets in 2023.
