Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull criticized MS Dhoni's batting approach during a match against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Simon Doull mentioned that MS Dhoni played numerous dot balls and missed opportunities to score runs.

The Chennai Super Kings suffered a 20-run loss in their recent match against the Delhi Capitals in Visakhapatnam on Sunday, March 31. The Super Kings failed to chase down the 192-run target, marking their first loss under Ruturaj Gaikwad's captaincy in the ongoing season.

However, Super Kings fans witnessed a vintage batting performance from MS Dhoni. The veteran batter scored an unbeaten 37 runs off 16 balls, including four boundaries and three sixes. It's worth mentioning that this was Dhoni's first appearance with the bat in the IPL 2024.

MS Dhoni Faced A Lot Of Dot Balls - Simon Doull

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Simon Doull expressed disbelief at his reluctance to take runs and stated it was a poor decision, considering the team's goal of winning. Doull disagreed with Dhoni's approach and felt it didn't portray a positive image.

"I know there was a lot of hoopa about Dhoni's innings but he blocked a lot of balls. He faced a lot of dots and then when he started to not take runs, I could not believe what I was watching. I know he is the great MS Dhoni but it was a poor call. It was a really poor call not to take those runs," Doull said.

"You are still trying to win the game and I know it is his first bat in a long time, first bat of the season and he is probably thinking at some stage of maybe getting to find some form but I didn't agree with it. I didn't agree with what happened in that situation. To me, it was a really poor look. I was watching it and thinking you know, it didn't look good for me. That just didn't look quite right to me when he wasn't taking runs," he further added.

The 42-year-old batter entered the crease at No. 8, with Chennai needing 72 runs off 23 deliveries. In the final over of the match, he aggressively scored 20 runs against Anrich Nortje's bowling, hitting two boundaries and two sixes, narrowing the defeat margin to 20 runs.

The five-time IPL champion passed the captaincy to young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad just before the tournament began. Dhoni, renowned for his success with Team India, also holds the record for the most wins as an IPL captain and led the CSK team to five titles out of 226 games.

Chennai Super Kings will play their next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday, April 5. The team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad currently holds the third position on the points table with four points from three matches, while their upcoming opponents are placed seventh with two points from three games.
