Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel made a shocking revelation ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Parthiv Patel stated that the five-time IPL champion Mumbai Indians (MI) had considered releasing Jasprit Bumrah after the 2015 season.

Jasprit Bumrah made his IPL debut for the Mumbai-based franchise in 2013. The right-arm pacer managed to pick up three wickets but struggled with a dismal economy rate of 10 in his maiden season. He took five wickets in 11 matches in the subsequent season of the IPL.

Mumbai Indians Wanted To Leave Jasprit Bumrah – Parthiv Patel

During a conversation with JioCinema, Parthiv Patel shared an anecdote about Jasprit Bumrah‘s early days with the Mumbai Indians during the IPL 2015. Patel mentioned that despite pressure from the team management, Rohit Sharma kept faith in Bumrah.

“In IPL 2015, When Bumrah was new to MI & his performance was such that the team wanted to leave him but Rohit Sharma believed in his potential & decided to keep him – from next IPL season we saw the result,” Parthiv Patel said.

Bumrah played only four matches in the IPL 2015, conceding 12.26 runs per over. Despite this, Rohit Sharma chose to retain him, a decision that proved crucial in subsequent seasons. It’s worth noting that Bumrah was initially signed by MI for an INR 10 lakh contract.

Bumrah eventually emerged as a force to be reckoned with, playing a pivotal role in the Mumbai Indians’ success by consistently delivering game-changing performances. He took 145 wickets in 120 matches at an impressive average of 23.30 and an economy rate of 7.39.

The franchise received a significant boost as Jasprit Bumrah regained his prime form. He delivered remarkable performances in the recent home Test series. Bumrah is determined to continue his outstanding form and contribute effectively to the team’s success.
