Punjab Kings??? terrible track record has been further laid bare by Royal Challengers Bangalore???s triumph in the recently concluded Women???s Premier League (WPL). RCB, on Sunday (March 17), locked horns against Delhi Capitals in the final of WPL 2024. The game was an opportunity for both teams to end their long wait for a T20 title in IPL or WPL. In the end, RCB came out on top as they thrashed Delhi Capitals by eight wickets to win the tournament.
Batting first, Delhi Capitals were bowled out for a modest total of 113 runs. At one stage, they were on 64 for no loss before Sophie Molineux took three wickets in one over to change the course of the game. Delhi just could not recover from those setbacks and was eventually bowled out for a modest total. In reply, RCB chased down the total with three balls remaining and two wickets in hand.
Punjab Kings??? poor record:
With the triumph in WPL 2024, RCB have ended their long wait for a title. The franchise had not won a single title since it started its journey way back in 2008 through IPL. In the IPL, they qualified for the final thrice but lost on all three occasions.
On the other hand, Delhi Capitals are yet to win the IPL or the WPL but they do have a title. In 2022, India Capitals, owned by Delhi Capitals??? co-owners GMR Group, won the Legends League Cricket. It means Punjab Kings are now the only IPL franchise that has been playing since 2008 but are yet to win any trophy.
The only IPL franchise (since 2008) that never won a league including all its branches is now *Punjab Kings*.
RCB women win the trophy.
India Capitals won trophy in 2022 LLC.
Unlike Delhi and Bengaluru, Punjab Kings do not have a team in the WPL or any other overseas T20 leagues at present. In the IPL, they are yet to go all the way. They came closest to winning the title in 2014 when they qualified for the final but lost the game to Kolkata Knight Riders. Since then, they have not even managed to make it to the playoffs and will be desperate to do well in IPL 2024:
