Team India, on Saturday (March 9), took the field on day three of the recently-concluded fifth Test against England without their captain Rohit Sharma. While the India skipper fielded on day one as well as batted in the first innings, he did not come out to field on day three at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.

Later, the BCCI revealed the reason behind the captain’s absence. In a media release, the board stated that the veteran batsman did not take the field due to a stiff back. In his absence, designated vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah led the side and did a brilliant job as India bowled out England for just 195 runs to win the game by an innings and 64 runs.

And while Rohit Sharma’s back injury soured the win a bit, the veteran batsman left the fans delighted after the game ended. He walked out for the congratulatory handshakes and looked absolutely comfortable while walking. His decision to not take the field might have been a precautionary measure.

Rohit Sharma praises teammates:

Speaking after India clinched the series 4-1, Rohit Sharma heaped praise on his teammates for the way they performed. India had their back against the wall after losing the first Test and the absence of some big names such as Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami only piled more pressure on them. However, the hosts bounced back in style and completely outplayed England to win the series.

“When you win a Test like this, everything has to fall in place. At some stage people are gonna and people are gonna come and we know that. These guys are maybe short of experience, they have played a lot of cricket and I can stand here and see that these guys responded pretty well under pressure. The credit goes to the entire team and it was pleasing to see,” said Rohit Sharma.

Talking about Rohit’s performance with the bat, he finished the series as India’s third-highest run-scorer. After a slow start to the series, he hit two centuries in the last three Tests and finished the series with 400 runs. With the back injury not looking serious, he is expected to be in action when the IPL 2024 gets underway later this month.
