The owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) went through a rollercoaster of emotions during her team’s match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, March 23.

The Kolkata Knight Riders were invited to bat first in the match by SRH captain Pat Cummins and they did a fantastic job after losing four quick wickets. Andre Russell and Phil Salt blasted terrific fifties while Ramandeep Singh and Rinku Singh chipped in with crucial runs to help their team post an amazing total of 208/7 on the board, which at one point seemed impossible.

Chasing the target, the SRH batters chipped with significant runs, but the most important innings was played by Heinrich Klaasen, who smashed a spectacular half-century and smoked Mitchell Starc in the 19th over to take his team near the finish line.

In the last over, SRH needed just 13 runs with Harshit Rana bowling and Heinrich Klaasen smashed a six on the first ball of the over. Looking at the massive hit from the South African batter, the SRH owner Kavya Maran erupted in joy and went crazy with her celebration. However, her celebration didn’t last long as SRH lost 2 wickets in the next four deliveries including the dismissal of Klaasen.

On the 5th ball of the over, Klaasen tried to smash a pace-off delivery with power but he got a leading edge and Suyash Sharma ran backward from the short third to produce an exceptional running catch under pressure situation.

Heinrich Klaasen was dismissed for 63 runs off 29 balls and looking at his dismissal, Kavya Maran was extremely dejected. Meanwhile, on the last ball, SRH didn’t get any runs and KKR won the thriller by 4 runs to start their campaign on high.

Speaking after the match, SRH captain Pat Cummins said that the match between the two teams was wonderful, but was unhappy to finish on the losing side. He also lauder Andre Russell for his incredible hitting and stated that bowling to the all-rounder is quite difficult. He elaborated:

“Close game, in the end, a wonderful game of cricket. Unfortunately didn’t go our way. I thought for the most part, really happy with how we bowled. Obviously Dre Russ in the end there does what Dre Russ does, he’s pretty hard to contain. Overall, I thought we did a pretty good job. You do your planning, you try to execute your best but a pretty tough guy to bowl to, played some good shots, couple of balls maybe we could have bowled a little bit differently but toughest job in cricket is bowling at someone like that in the end.”

Pat Cummins acknowledged the innings played by Heinrich Klaasen and Shahbaz Ahmed that helped them make a comeback in the match. He said:

“It’s one of those, goes one way or the other, amazing job by Klaas (Klaasen) and Shahbaz to get us back into the game and get us into that position. Who would have thought we’d get that close. Unfortunately a little bit too much. In a game where we didn’t really pull it all together, we still almost competed against a very good side at their home venue, lots to be encouraged by, lot of good performers, a couple of points to work on also. Happy with how the toss went.”
