"You should behave well.."- Sunil Gavaskar on MS Dhoni

Former Indian batsman and 1983 World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar was all praise for Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni in a recent fanfare as a build-up for IPL 2024. The event which was organized by official IPL TV broadcasters Star Sports, took place in Dhoni’s hometown of Ranchi where MSD’s dedicated fanbase turned up in huge numbers.

Sunil Gavaskar who was sitting along with former India pacer Varun Aaron and the Star Sports host, was asked to shed light upon his gesture of asking MS Dhoni to sign his shirt. The precious and heartfelt moment unfolded during CSK’s final home game of the 2023 season at the MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai. Dhoni and CSK then went on to claim their 5th IPL title in the finale against Gujarat Titans in front of a jampacked Narendra Modi stadium.

Gavaskar talks about his first impression of MS Dhoni

The 74-year-old began by talking about his first impression of seeing MS Dhoni play for the Indian national team. Gavaskar claimed that he was in awe of MSD when he first saw him and while expressing his gratitude, Gavaskar also called Dhoni a hero.

“I became an instant fan when I first saw MSD play and a fan always wants to meet its hero, maybe have a conversation, take an autograph if possible, and also a photograph. Nowadays, dualfie is trending so maybe take a dualfie.” – Sunil Gavaskar said via Star Sports’ IPL event.

“But there was not much time for a dualfie but then I saw him and the entire CSK team taking a lap of the Chepauk stadium to say Thank You to the local supporters as they were heading to somewhere else for the knockouts. So then I thought it a good time since I admire MS Dhoni a lot for his cricket, his attitude, and his behavior.” – Gavaskar added. 

Gavaskar then went on to praise the 2011 Cricket World Cup-winning captain for his modest behavior despite tasting so much success and for the way he carries himself. That intrigued Sunil Gavaskar to go and ask MS Dhoni to sign on his shirt.

“You have a big responsibility when you become a role model that you should behave well with everyone and become a good role model. So in that sense, he is an amazing role model. And the way he conducts himself with modesty and that’s why I went to him and requested (for the autograph) and I’m very happy that he agreed to sign on my shirt and the shirt is still very very proudly in my house.” – Gavaskar concluded.
