New Zealand stand-in skipper Tim Southee has said that Kane Williamson opting out of the T20 Internationals series against India is a big miss for the team as he is a quality player.
On Tuesday, it was announced that the all-format Captain of New Zealand, Kane Williamson, has decided to take a rest and will not be participating in the T20 Internationals series against India. However, he will return to the team for the two-Test matches against India.
New Zealand National Cricket Team are set to play three T20 Internationals games and two Test games against India in the tour. The T20 Internationals series will begin from November 17 in Jaipur, and the Test series will commence from November 25 in Kanpur.
Speaking on Press-conference on the eve of the first T20I game against India, Southee said that he was excited and honoured to captain the team in the absence of Williamson.
“Kane Williamson is a big miss, he is a quality player and it’s an opportunity for some of us to come in. It’s exciting, a great challenge and an honour to captain New Zealand,” Southee said.
Guys Have Had To Quarantine, And It Has Been A Challenge – Tim Southee
Tim Southee also highlighted that New Zealand players have been playing non-stop cricket in the lead up to the India tour. As they played the 5-match T20I series against Bangladesh, they played the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and then ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. He stated:
“Yes, it is obviously a pretty busy schedule. We knew that this would be the case leading into the T20 World Cup. We had a series in Bangladesh, guys were there in the IPL. I think with the Covid-19 pandemic, scheduling has come a lot tougher. Guys have had to quarantine and it has been a challenge but yeah, you just have to crack on and play some cricket.”
Southee mentioned that they have a good 15-member squad, and due to a hectic schedule, the players will be rotated throughout the series. He said:
“Yeah, it is something we have to look at throughout the series. Three games in five days with travel days in between. Guys will be managed throughout the series, but yeah, we have a squad of 15 and I am sure they will be used throughout the series,”
Talking about the Final loss against Australia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021, Southee said that he is disappointed. He asserted:
“We had a travel day yesterday from Dubai to Jaipur, yeah guys are looking forward to the challenge of playing in India. Yes, very disappointed to lose the T20 World Cup final but we are looking forward to having another crack in this format in a day’s time,”
