Mohammed Shami is one of the best right-arm pacers to play for Team India. Mohammed Shami can be termed as a master of good length. He is one of the premium pacers across all three formats for India.
Shami is a right-arm pacer who has played more than 100 ODIs for India. He made his debut in January 2013 in an ODI match against Pakistan. Later, he went on to represent Team India regularly in all three formats.
The right-arm pacer played in the ICC T20 World Cup 2014, which was his first ICC tournament. He also played in the WTC final 2021 and 2023, ODI World Cup 2023, and Champions Trophy 2017, where Team India finished as runners-up. Shami was part of the Indian team that won the Asia Cup titles in 2016 and 2023.
Early Life
Mohammed Shami was born on September 3, 1990, in Uttar Pradesh. His father Tauseef Ali was a farmer, who had five sons and one daughter. Like Shami, his other four brothers also tried their luck in cricket.
Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly recommended his name to Bengal Cricket in 2010 after watching him play. The Bengal Ranji team picked Shami in their squad for the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy. This was Shami's first biggest break in competitive cricket.
Shami made his international debut in 2013.
Since then, he has cemented his spot in the national team with a consistent bowling attack. He has been part of all major ICC and ACC tournaments during the last decade.
With Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma, Shami became a crucial member of India's pace department in WTC 2019-21. Mohammed Shami is also known for his attacking batting as a tailender.
The right-handed batter stormed a match-winning half-century at Lord's in a Test match during India's tour of England 2021. It is one of the memorable victories for Team India against England.
IPL Career
Mohammed Shami has been part of various teams in IPL. Since the 2022 season, he has been a member of Gujarat Titans. Shami won the trophy in IPL 2022 with GT and grabbed the purple cap in the 2023 season with the most wickets.
Earlier, the right-arm pacer represented teams like Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings. He has played more than 100 matches in the Indian Premier League and is one of the most dangerous domestic pacers. Since IPL 2019, Shami has grabbed at least 19 scalps in every season.
