Sheffield Shield News
Ranji Trophy needs little introduction. It is one of the biggest and oldest first-class cricket tournament in the world. It is played in India and is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Ranji Trophy is the first big stage for the Indian players who dream of representing Team India at the highest stage. A good outing in the tournament is often rewarded with a national call-up. Over the years, dozens of legendary players did well in the Ranji Trophy before making it big in international cricket.
The first edition of the Ranji Trophy was played in the 1934-35 season with Madras and Mysore playing the first game on 4 November 1934. The tournament was originally called 'the cricket championship of India'. Later in 1935, it was renamed after Ranjitsinhji, who was the first Indian to play international cricket.
State teams and regional teams participate in the Ranji Trophy. At present, more than 30 teams play in the Ranji Trophy. Mumbai are the most successful side in the history of the tournament. They have won the Ranji Trophy 42 teams.
The Round-robin matches in the Ranji Trophy are of four days in length while knockout matches are played for five days. If a match ends up in draw during the Round-robin stage, the team leading after the first innings gets three points while the other team gets one point. During the knockout stage if there is no outright winner, the team leading after the first innings is the winner.
The tournament is hugely popular among the cricket fans. And if you are also one of those fans who follow Ranji Trophy passionately, make sure to follow Cricket Addictor as well to get all the Ranji Trophy news in detail.
