Team India won another series at home, their fifth in a row under new all-formats leader Rohit Sharma. India defeated Sri Lanka by 238 runs in the pink-ball Test in Bengaluru on Monday to win the series and, as a result, India’s final home match in 2022.

With India not playing a Test match until after the T20 World Cup in October, with the exception of one odd encounter in England, it’s time to look ahead, and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has identified the “next great thing” in Indian cricket.

Shreyas Iyer dominated in the Bengaluru Test, scoring 92 and 67 runs in two innings to become the first Indian hitter to reach two half-centuries in a single Day-Night match.

Iyer set the tone with his 98-ball 92 in the first innings, which helped India end with 252 on a tough Chinnaswamy ground that featured uneven bounce and turn. He hit a superb 67 in the second innings to help India set a 477-run mark for Sri Lanka.

“Yes sure, he is looking like that,” Gavaskar said in an interview when asked if Iyer is the next great thing in Indian cricket.

“Because anyone else who performs the way he did…his batting and strokes are incredibly appealing. He is a fine young man. So it all indicates to him being another big thing in Indian cricket within next 6 to 8 months ” He Continued.
