IND vs SL: Jasprit Bumrah Becomes First Indian Bowler To Achieve This Feat In Test Cricket

Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah originated a new record in the history of cricket with his stellar bowling performance against Sri Lanka in the second Test at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

On Monday, India won its first Test series under Rohit’s leadership after they defeated the visitors by 238 runs in the second Test and sealed the series 2-0. Bumrah, who was the vice-captain of India in this series, picked 5/29 in the first innings as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 109 in the first innings.

Jasprit Bumrah equalled Kapil Dev’s record

The 28-year-old claimed his first five-wicket haul in India playing in his 29th Test. It was his eighth five-for overall and he equalled legendary Indian player Kapil Dev’s record to achieve the feat in 29 Tests itself.

Bumrah returned with three wickets in the second innings including Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, who looked determined to hold the one end of the pitch. He ended with the match figures of 8/47 in the second Test.

The Indian speedster has bagged eight five-wicket hauls- two in South Africa, West Indies and England; one each in Australia and India. Bumrah also achieved the unique record of picking a five-for in a match-winning cause for India in five different continents- Asia, Europe, Oceania, Africa and America.

He picked  5/54 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2018, 5/85 against England in Nottingham in 2018, 5/33 against Australia in Melbourne in 2019, 5/7 and 6/27 against West Indies in Antigua and Kingston respectively in 2019. He joined the likes of Graham McKenzie, Jason Gillespie and Dale Steyn to achieve this feat.

Bumrah has accumulated 123 Test wickets from 29 matches at an average of 21.73 and an economy rate of 2.64. He is the Indian bowler after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. He got the wickets of Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase in the second Test against West Indies in Kingston in August 2019.

Bumrah is currently ranked in 10th spot in the ICC Test rankings and sixth in the ODI rankings.
