England has been privileged to have some of the best leaders over the years in test cricket especially and they have taken the side to the top of the rankings as well. The crowd had always been at the back of the England captains and that has been one of the main advantages of being an English captain.

England have been playing a lot more test matches at present for a year and their tight schedule is always visible. This has impacted their success percentage in terms of wins, but their number of wins has gone up subsequently. Here are the 5 England captains with the most wins in Test Cricket.

Peter May is fifth on the list of England captains with the most wins in Test cricket. May captained the English side from 1955 to 1961 for 6 years and the right-hand batter had some good numbers in Test cricket. May scored 4537 runs in 66 Tests at an average of 46.8.

May was one of the finest English captains as well with 20 wins and 10 losses in 41 Tests as captain. He managed to draw 10 Tests and had a win percentage of 48.78. He was awarded the Wisden cricketers of the year in 1952.

Andrew Strauss was one of the best openers from England to have played in the longer formats and he had an excellent technique alongside a lot of left-hander elegance. Strauss played 100 Tests for England scoring 7037 runs at an average of 40.9.

Strauss was one of the successful captains of England with 24 wins and 11 losses in 50 Tests as captain. He also managed to draw 15 tests and had a win percentage of 48. Strauss is 4th in the list of English captains with the most wins in Tests.

Alastair Cook has captained the most number of Tests for England so far and he also leads the chart for scoring the most Test runs for England. Cook made his debut at a very young age and he was pipped to go past Sachin’s record in Tests for the most runs. The left-hander is one of the greatest openers of all time.

Cook was a decent captain as well for England with 24 wins and 22 losses in the 59 tests he captained and he is the 3rd on the list of English captains with the most wins in Tests. Cook had a win percentage of 40.67 in his period of captaincy from 2010 to 2016.

Michael Vaughan was one of the most elegant right-hand batsmen and had a great career as the captain of the English side including winning the Ashes in 2005. Vaughan played 82 Tests scoring 5719 runs at an average of 41.4 and he had one of the most compact techniques in the game.

Vaughan led England in Tests from 2003 to 2008 and he managed to win 26 of the 51 Tests he captained which is the second most number of wins for an English captain in tests. He lost just 11 tests with 14 draws and he had a stunning win percentage of 50.98.

Joe Root is the current captain of the English side and he still looks very young with lots of cricket left in him. The Yorkshire lad after the win against India in the third test at Headingly today has become the most successful English captain with 27 wins in 55 Tests as captain.

Root has been captaining the side for the last four years since 2017 and he still looks well set and hungry for a lot more wins. The right-hander has an average of above 50 in tests and he has been in the form of his life. His win percentage is 49.09 as captain and he is expected to become the greatest English cricketer and captain when he ends his career.
