History

Early Cricket in Mumbai

Before Wankhede Stadium was built, Mumbai hosted international matches at:

  • Bombay Gymkhana

  • Brabourne Stadium

These venues played a key role in early Indian cricket.

Construction of Wankhede Stadium (1974)

Wankhede Stadium was built after a dispute between the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and the Cricket Club of India over ticket allocation.

  • Named after S. K. Wankhede

  • Built in just over a year

  • First Test match: India vs West Indies (1975)

Since then, it has become the main cricket venue in Mumbai.

Renovation (2011 World Cup Upgrade)

The stadium was completely redeveloped before the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Key upgrades:

  • Modern seating (bucket seats)

  • Improved facilities

  • Reduced capacity for better comfort

After renovation, capacity became around 33,000 spectators
