Pakistan face-off West Indies in the second of three T20 internationals on Tuesday at National Stadium in Karachi. Pakistan have been in pretty good form in T20Is, of late. The Men in Green enjoyed a pretty good campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
Impressive performances during the league stage matches helped them reach the semi-finals of the tournament. This was followed by another successful series in Bangladesh. Babar Azam and Co. beat Bangladesh by 3-0 margin in the recent T20 series. They would look to replicate a similar performance against the West Indies at home.
Babar Azam is leading the team, while M Rizwan assumes the vice-captaincy duties. Apart from these two, the batting department consists of the likes of F Zaman, Haider Ali, and Iftikhar Ahmed to name a few.
In the fast bowling department, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf will continue to be the biggest bets. Shahnawaz Dhani, who was impressive in the last edition of PSL, should play as the third seamer in the playing XI. Besides, Shadab Khan will share the spin bowling duties alongside M Nawaz.
Notably, the likes of Imad Wasim, Shoaib Malik and Hasan Ali have been rested in the T20 series.
On the other hand, West Indies are playing with a depleted squad. First choice players such as Evin Lewis, Lendl Simmons, Andre Russell, and Shimron Hetmyer have all opted out of the tour due to personal reasons. Besides, Jason Holder has been rested for the series. Furthermore, Kieron Pollard is currently recovering from the hamstring injury and, therefore, he too isn’t part of the squad. In his absence, Nicholas Pooran is leading the team.
To make matter worse, three players who were earlier part of the squad, Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell, and Kyle Mayers have been tested positive for Covid-19 and won’t participate in the series. West Indies only have 12 players to pick their playing XI. The batting department has got the likes of Brandon King, Nicholas Pooran, Shai Hope, and Darren Bravo.
Add to that, West Indies all have some highly talented all-rounders such as Odean Smith, Dominic Drakes, and Romario Shepherd. All three performed exceedingly well in the CPL 2021. It will be interesting to see how they fare with both bat and ball in the ongoing T20 series against Pakistan.
