The Indian Premier League recieved massive support from the cricketing fans not just in India but throughout the world and over the years, became the biggest and most popular T20 franchise league in the world surpassing Big Bash and other leagues. Witnessing such huge response of the tournament, and looking at the year on year growth of the league, the Board of Cricket Control India (BCCI) decided to launch the league for the women cricketers and it came to be known as the Women’s Premier League. The inaugural season was played in 2023 with Mumbai and Navi Mumbai hosting most of the matches of the league. Mumbai Indians, one of the 5 teams participating in the tournament defeated the Delhi Capitals in the finals to win the title of the champions and became the inaugural champion of the league.
Out of the the 5 teams participating in the opening season of the league, Delhi Capitals turned out to be the most successful team for the season bagging 6 wins out of their 8 Women’s Premier League match played. They were the topper of the WPL points table 2023. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans played a sub par game and ended on the bottom of the table with just 2 wins out of 8 matches played.
In the next season that was played between February and March, fans saw defending champions Mumbai Indians locking horns against the Delhi Capitals in the opening encounter of the tournament. The matches were played in Delhi and Bengaluru, with the former hosting the finals of the season. Royal Challengers Bangalore won the second season of the Women’s Premier League cricket tournament defeating Delhi Capitals in the finals and bagged the maiden title for the franchise across the men’s and women’s formats.
Just like the auction format of the IPL, Women’s Premier League WPL saw 30 players participating in the auction and were picked up by various teams to solidify their arsenal of players and form a squad that is capable enough to win the matches and lead to the title.
Looking at the quick overview of the WPL stats, Ellyse Perry from RCB scored maximum number of runs and bagged the Orange cap while Shreyanka Patil, yet again from the RCB bagged a total of 13 wickets to clinch the title of the Purple cap holder of the season. All in all, a franchise whose men side are still looking forward for their first title until the 17th edition of the IPL, the women side of it became the most successful team of the recent edition of the WPL T20. Replicating the viewership trends and fan response, the Women Premier League are set to become another successful tournament hosted by the BCCI.
