The Mumbai Indians roped in some of the biggest match winners in women’s cricket at the auction for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which took place on Monday. The franchise bought India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, star all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar, England batter Nat Sciver, and Kiwi all-rounder Amelia Kerr to build a very strong squad.

The Mumbai-based franchise spent a total of Rs 12 crore from its purse and bought 17 players. They bought an Indian captain for Rs 1.8 crore, and she is their third most expensive purchase after Nat Sciver-Brunt for Rs 3.2 crore and Pooja Vastrakar for Rs 1.9 crore. The Mumbai Indians’ women’s team have heavily bet on all-rounders, like the men’s team.

We Are Very Happy With The Way Our Auction Turned Out – Nita Ambani

Mumbai Indians team owner Nita Ambani discussed the excitement of the first auction for women’s cricket. Nita said that she was happy with the way the auction turned out and welcomed Harman to the team. She was also excited to see Nat Sciver, Pooja Vastrakar, and other talented women and young girls join the MI family.

“Auctions are always exciting, but today was really special. It was the first auction, and firsts are always so exciting. Today was really a special day for women’s cricket. It is a historic day. More than the names and the figures, it was just overwhelming to see everyone cheering and celebrating for the wonderful talent of women cricketers,” said Nita Ambani.

“As a team, we are very happy with the way our auction turned out, and we are happy to get the second Indian captain for Mumbai Indians. Welcome Harman to the MI family. We are also very excited to see Nat (Sciver) in the team, Pooja (Vastrakar), and all the talented women and young girls who are joining the MI family,” she added.

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 is set to be played between March 4 and 26. All 22 games in the inaugural edition will be played at Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
