India moved to the top of the points table with a clinical 6-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the fourth match of the Nidahas Trophy.

The Men in Blue chased down 153 in 17.3 overs with nine deliveries to spare as Manish Pandey (42*) and Dinesh Karthik (39*) stitched an unbeaten 68-run stand for the fifth wicket.

The match was reduced to 19-overs-a-side after a lengthy rain delay. India had started their chase of 153 in disastrous fashions,  losing openers Rohit Sharma (11) and Shikhar Dhawan (8) cheaply. Suresh Raina then hit two fours and as many sixes in his 15-ball 27 to set the tone.  However, Raina and KL Rahul’s departure threatened to derail the chase. But Pandey and Karthik joined hands to take India home comfortably.

Earlier in the game, Shardul Thakur’s career best figures of 4/27 helped India restrict the hosts to 152 for 9. Sri Lanka looked set for a big total after they hammered 24 runs in the first two overs but kept losing wickets at regular intervals. As a result, they failed to finish the innings strongly.

With the game done and dusted, here is a look at some interesting numbers from the game:

1.   KL Rahul ended up with a dubious record in the game. The Karnataka star became the first Indian, and ninth batsman overall, to be out hit wicket in a T20I. Lala Amarnath and Nayan Mongia were the first Indians to be out in a similar fashion in Tests and ODIs respectively.

2. – KL Rahul now has the highest batting averages in T20Is with the criteria being a minimum 350 runs. Rahul averages 50.89 and is followed by his skipper Virat Kohli (50.84) and Pakistan’s Babar Azam (48.08).

3. The first three balls of both these innings combined went for 21 runs, which is the most for the first three balls aggregated for a T20I. The previous highest was 18.

4. Out-of-form Rohit Sharma endured another nightmare with the bat, scoring just 11. The India skipper has now scored just one fifty-plus score in the last 11 innings. His last seven scores in T20Is read: 27, 21, 0, 11, 0, 17, 11.

5. Sri Lanka became the joint-highest to have lost most T20Is at a venue.  They have now lost 14 games at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Zimbabwe have lost the same number of games at the Harare Sports Club.

6. Sri Lanka now has the second most number of losses in T20Is at home. The list is led by South Africa who have lost 21 games at home. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have lost 19 T20Is at home and are followed by New Zealand, and Zimbabwe who have lost 17.

7. – Washington Sundar’s first four wickets in T20Is have been Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera and Kusal Perera.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
