Stat Attack: Jhulan Goswami Achieves Unique Double in First ODI Against South Africa

Indian women team’s pace spearhead Jhulan Goswami has added yet another feather to her already illustrious cap. The veteran pacer achieved a unique feat during the first One-Day International against South Africa in Kimberley on Monday (February 5).
The 35-year old became the first woman cricketer to claim over 150 scalps while scoring more than 1000 runs in the One-Day Internationals. Goswami achieved the unique feat after scoring eight runs in the match in addition to picking up four wickets for just 24 runs.
In 165 matches so far, Goswami has scored 1003 runs in addition to picking up a record 199 wickets. She is followed by England’s Jenny Gunn and former Australia skipper Lisa Sthalekar.

Last year, Jhulan had also become the leading wicket-taker in Women’s One-Day Internationals going past Australian Cathryn Fitzpatrick record of 180 wickets. She had achieved the feat during the quadrangular series in South Africa.
The ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year 2007, Arjuna Awardee, Padma Shri winner and the once the fastest bowler in women’s cricket has been the mainstay of India women bowling unit since her debut in 2002.
As of now, she needs just one wicket to become the first women cricketer to pick up 200 wickets in ODIs. With 289 international wickets, Goswami is the all-time leading wicket-taker in women’s cricket.
India crush South Africa in first ODI:
Coming to the match, Mithali Raj & Co. began their tour of South Africa with a comprehensive 88-runs victory. Batting first, the women in blue scored 213 for seven in the allotted 50 overs. Smriti Mandhana top-scored for the visitors, scoring 84 while skipper Raj scored 45.
In reply, South Africa was all out for a paltry 125. Goswami was the pick of the bowler taking four for 24 while Shikha Pandey picked up three wickets for 23 runs.
