Asia Cup 2022: Afif Hossain Appointed Bangladesh's Vice-Captain
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced in a press release on Saturday night that batting-all-rounder Afif Hossain Dhrubo from Bangladesh has been appointed vice-captain of the Tigers in the Asia Cup.
Since his debut in February 2018, the 22-year-old has participated in 47 T20 Internationals.
Afif, a crucial member of the middle order who can also bowl as an occasional off-spinner when necessary, is regarded as one of Bangladesh’s most long-term promising players.
Afif may play a new role for Bangladesh starting on August 30 against Afghanistan in Sharjah as the number four hitter in the batting order, in addition to aiding Shakib Al Hasan.
Afif has played 42 innings in T20Is so far, scoring 698 runs with an average of 19, and a strike rate of 118. In addition, he has eight wickets in 16 innings.
Bangladesh Will Be Up Against In-Form Afghanistan In Their Tournament Opener
Meanwhile, in the Asia Cup opener, fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi contributed bowling stats of 3-11 to Afghanistan’s eight-wicket victory against Sri Lanka.
Afghanistan dismissed Sri Lanka for a pitiful 105, a score that their batters in Dubai eclipsed in 10.1 overs.
Hazratullah Zazai, a left-hander, who remained unbeaten at 37, and Rahmanllah Gurbaz, a wicketkeeper-batsman, who scored 40 runs, added 83 runs for the first wicket to continue the bowlers’ domination.
The six-nation event serves as a warm-up for the T20 World Cup in Australia in October–November. Afghanistan plays in Group B with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and has had a strong start to its campaign.
Left-arm quick Farooqi struck with consecutive deliveries in the opening over of the innings to send Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka stumbling back to the pavilion for two and zero.
Sri Lanka never recovered from the early jolt.
