Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir claimed that he would like to see Suryakumar Yadav bat at number three ahead of Virat Kohli in the upcoming matches of the Asia Cup 2022.
Following the 40-run win over Hong Kong in their second Group A match on Wednesday,
Rohit Sharma and his men became the second team to qualify for the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup.
Should there be a change in Suryakumar Yadav’s batting order?
Virat Kohli (59*) and Suryakumar Yadav (68*) starred with the bat for the Men in Blue. The duo forged an unbeaten 98 runs partnership for the third wicket to put India in a commanding position with a total of 192 for 2 at the end of their innings.
However, there has been constant chaos over the position of the two dynamic Indian batters.
It was during the second innings when the official broadcasters Star Sports started a poll in their social media handles, majority of the fans voted for Virat Kohli to continue as India’s number three.
At the same time, Gambhir, who was present in the commentary box, had a totally different opinion on this topic.
You would want Suryakumar Yadav to utilise his form: Gautam Gambhir
Considering Suryakumar’s form at the moment, Gambhir believes that the Indian team management should promote the Mumbai player ahead of Virat Kohli at No.3 in the upcoming games.
“Someone like Suryakumar Yadav, who is in such good form, you would want to utilise his form. Virat Kohli can come at 4, Hardik Pandya at 5 and then you can shuffle the batting order,” Gambhir claimed on air.
Looking at the top order of India, Gambhir believes that a player like Surya should be there at number three to cut down the pressure early on.
“Suryakumar is a sort of player who can take the pressure off if an opener is dismissed early. I don’t really believe in having a template but he can play the explosive game,” Gambhir added.
Suryakumar is open to bat at any order and has conveyed the same to skipper Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid.
