Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja was very impressed with the way Hong Kong performed against India in the Asia Cup 2022 Group A match at Dubai International Stadium on Wednesday.
The Nizakat Khan-led side came through to the main event by winning all three games in the Asia Cup qualifiers. They defeated the likes of UAE and Kuwait to finish at the top of the qualifying round.
This was the third time Hong Kong was playing India in their history. Nobody can forget their incredible effort in the most recent encounter in the 2018 Asia Cup when Hong Kong openers nearly pulled off an upset against Rohit Sharma and men.
Even in this match, after electing to bowl first, Hong Kong bowlers made things difficult for the Indian top three. They got the big wicket of Rohit Sharma early on and gave a difficult stay in the middle to a player like KL Rahul. They kept the Indian batting quiet until the arrival of Suryakumar Yadav after in the 13th over.
Hong Kong do not have the opportunity to play a team like this very often: Ajay Jadeja
Jadeja gave full credit to the Hong Kong side for making the most out of the opportunity of playing a formidable side like India.
“This will be a story that Hong Kong players will be telling their grandchildren. They do not have the opportunity to play a team like this very often,” Jadeja said on Cricbuzz.
Hong Kong should be proud of this performance: Ajay Jadeja
Even though Hong Kong lost the game by 40 runs at the end, they managed to play a complete 20 overs with the bat and scored over 150 which was more than what Pakistan managed against India at the same venue last sunday.
“Hong Kong should be proud of this performance. It is not easy to qualify and then face one of the biggest teams in the world,” Jadeja said.
“At no stage did it look like they were over-awed. They were not competitive, but it is still an achievement for Hong Kong,” he concluded.
Hong Kong will come up against Pakistan on Friday (September 2) which will be a must win game for both sides to make it to the Super 4 stage of Asia Cup 2022.
