Former Pakistan player Younis Khan said senior Indian batter should not focus too much ahead of his future and stick to basics to overcome the drought of runs.

Kohli’s lean patch with the bat has been in the limelight since the time he relinquished Indian team captaincy from all formats.

Virat Kohli aims to return with form in Asia Cup 2022

Kohli scored 11 and 20 in the rescheduled fifth Test against England, which India lost by seven wickets and levelled the series 2-2. He was rested for the first T20I but returned with scores of 1 and 10 in the next two games.

Nothing changed in the ODI leg as the 33-year-old managed 16 and 17 in the last two matches after missing the first due to a groin injury.

Kohli was rested for the West Indies ODI series by the Indian cricket board along with other senior players. The senior Indian player opted out of the West Indies T20Is and ODI series against Zimbabwe.

Virat Kohli should not think about what lies ahead: Younis Khan

Younis admitted the hardships of players finding difficulties with form over an extensive period while citing his own example to throw light on it. The former Pakistan skipper advised Kohli with a simple formula to bouncing back against this particular phase.

Several players have gone through extended phases of lean patches in their international careers. They have been short of runs and without enough good performances. You tend to feel as if maybe this could be your last game or last series,” Younis told The Telegraph.

“I too have gone through such phases. But I had adopted a simple formula. I went back to my basics. I feel Virat too should not think about what lies ahead. He should go back to his basics and play according to the situation, play for the team, and then, with the little bit of energy that is left, he can utilise it to play for himself,” he added.

Kohli will return to action for India when they face arch-rivals Pakistan in their first games of Asia Cup 2022 on August 28 in Dubai.
