Sri Lanka are one of the most successful sides in the history of the Asia Cup. In fact, no team has played in more editions of the Asia Cup than Sri Lanka. Only India have more titles than Sri Lanka's six. They have been playing in the Asia Cup since the inaugural edition in 1984 and are the only team to have played in all the editions so far.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, have been playing in the Asia Cup since the second edition in 1986. They have also not missed any edition since making their debut in the continental championship.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh played a game against each other in the Asia Cup in 1986. Sri Lanka won it by 7 wickets and it marked the beginning of a dominating run against the Bangla Tigers. Sri Lanka did not lose a single game against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup from 1986 to 2010. During this period, they won 10 games in a row against Bangladesh. Sri Lanka's winning run finally ended in 2012. Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka in 2016 and 2018 as well.
