Asia Cup Stats & Records
Asia Cup is a multi-nation tournament and is the only continental championship in cricket. It is organized by the Asia Cricket Council. The first edition of the Asia Cup was played in 1984. India won the inaugural edition that featured two other teams - Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Three teams participated in the second edition in 1986 although India were not one of them. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan played the second edition and Sri Lanka were the champions. In 1988, four teams participated in the Asia Cup for the first time and India went on to become the first team to win the competition twice.
In 1990, India won the tournament once again to become the first team to defend the Asia Cup title and also win it thrice. After 1990, the Asia Cup faced a five-year hiatus before being held in 1995. India once again lifted the trophy to extend their supremacy although that victory also marked the beginning of a trophy-less run for the team that last more than decade.
In 1997, Sri Lanka won their second Asia Cup title before Pakistan clinched their maiden title in 2000. In 2004, more than four teams participated in the Asia Cup for the first time as UAE and Hong Kong made their debuts. Sri Lanka won the 2004 edition to become only the second team after India to win the Asia Cup three times.
In 2008, Sri Lanka won the tournament again to equal India's tally of four Asia Cup titles. India finally ended the drought by clinching the Asia Cup in 2010 and becoming the first team to lift the title five times. In 2012, Pakistan won the Asia Cup before Sri Lanka won the tournament in 2014.
India have been the dominant force in the Asia Cup in the last one decade or so. Since 2016, they have won three of the four Asia Cup titles including the last edition in 2023. With eight titles, India are the most successful side in the competition followed by Sri Lanka (6) and Pakistan (2).
The upcoming Asia Cup 2025 will be the 17th edition of the tournament. The competition is scheduled to be played in the UAE from September 9 to 28. Eight teams - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, UAE, Hong Kong and Oman - will be taking part in Asia Cup 2025.
