Late on Thursday night, after using a baton charge to disperse the crowd waiting in line to purchase tickets for the third Twenty20 International between India and Australia, the Hyderabad police filed a case against the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) for the chaos that resulted in a stampede outside the Secunderabad Gymkhana ground.

The Begumpet police filed a case against the cricket association under sections 420 (cheating) and 337 (causing harm to any person by doing any act in such a hasty or careless manner as to endanger human life or the personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code in response to complaints from the injured individuals.

Case Registered Against Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) Management

The complainants wanted action from Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA)  after alleging fraud, unethical marketing, carelessness, and poor management.

“A case is registered only against the HCA management for now. An investigation is on,” DCP (North) Chandana Deepti told indianexpress.com.

The third T20 International match between Australia and India was slated to take place at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal on September 25. The association had already announced the sale of offline tickets for the event. Over 20 cricket fans were hurt in the stampede, and seven people—two of them police officers—were sent to a private hospital.

For the start of ticket sales, about 10,000 people had gathered outside the Gymkhana ground entrance. According to police, the disturbance was caused by HCA’s poor management and an unexpected downpour.

Meanwhile, the HCA announced in a statement late on Thursday night that all seats for the game on Sunday have been claimed.

“Ensure you collect your physical tickets by showing the email confirmation received during online purchase, valid government-approved ID proof and submitting a photocopy of the same.

In case you are collecting on someone else’s behalf an authority letter clearly stating the same with the photocopy of both the ID proofs will be mandatory,” it added.

The Uppal RGIC stadium can accommodate 55,000 people. The organisation had made 34,000 tickets available for purchase. Mohammed Azharuddin, the president of the HCA, who is being accused of mishandling the preparations for the cricket match, assured the media on Thursday night that he will reveal all of the information during a news conference on Friday.
