Former National Selector Saba Karim explained the reason why the team management gave the long rope to Suryakumar Yadav in the one-day internationals despite failing to replicate his T20I success in the 50-over format. India middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav failed to make an impact in the ongoing three-match ODI series against Australia at home.
The 32-year-old, who isn’t a regular member of India’s ODI set-up, got a chance in the first match in Mumbai after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the series due to a back injury. The right-handed batter was dismissed for golden ducks in two consecutive matches by left-arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc. He scored 123 runs in his last 11 innings with seven single-digit scores.

Suryakumar Is A Mystery At The Moment – Saba Karim
Speaking to India News Sports ahead of the 3rd ODI between India and Australia, Saba Karim said that Shreyas Iyer will reclaim the No. 4 spot in the batting line-up at the ICC World Cup. The former Indian cricketer said that the team management backed Suryakumar Yadav in the 50-over format, despite his poor performances.
“The team management sees Suryakumar Yadav as an option for Shreyas Iyer. I am sure that Iyer will return and be India’s No. 4 at the World Cup because he has done really well in that position. Suryakumar is a mystery at the moment. He is at the top in T20Is, how can he not score runs in ODIs? This is why I feel Rohit Sharma wants to give him a few more chances,” Karim said.

We Can Consider Sanju Samson As An Option – Saba Karim
Karim believes that wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson can be considered as an option to replace Suryakumar in the Indian middle order. The 55-year-old said that both Sarfaraz Ahmed and Rajat Patidar are injured at the moment.
“What other options do we have for the No.4 spot? Sarfaraz Ahmed and Rajat Patidar come to mind, but they are both injured at the moment. We can consider Sanju Samson as an option. It is very important to have a few options ready. But we don’t know if he is fit or not,” Karim added.
