To keep their lead in the World Test Championships, Australia will play Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series. The Pat Cummins-led squad had previously utterly destroyed England at home and managed to squeak by with a victory on the historic tour of Pakistan.

Facing Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka is a different ballgame, though. Australia will be hoping that Nathan Lyon, their star spinner, performs well and troubles the opposing batters. Cummins would like to think that this time, the spin department can handle the majority of the burden because SL pitches have consistently demonstrated an inclination to favour turn since day one.

‘I had a conversation with him in 2016’: Nathan Lyon

Before the opening Test, Nathan Lyon discussed bowling in the subcontinent and how playing in subcontinental Test matches transformed his perspective completely after experiencing Rangana Herath.

Lyon was cited by cricket.com.au as stating, “I had a talk with him after the Test series in 2016.”

“What do you do that I do not do?” I asked. And he added, “I know you guys will mess up if I put the ball in one spot,” he said those things.

“That is a really basic mentality. What I learned from it was that the key to success for everyone is being able to outlast their defense long enough to create opportunities.”

“That is what Rangana Herath excelled at. He repeatedly tested our defence, and he was rewarded for it.”

The two-match Test series between Sri Lanka and Australia will begin on June 29 at the Galle International Cricket Stadium as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 cycle.
