The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team scripted history by winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 after thrashing South Africa by seven runs in the thrilling final in Barbados on June 29.

With this historic triumph, India ended their 11-year-long drought for the ICC trophy. Notably, the Men in Blue clinched their second T20 World Cup title after 17 years. India had won the first title under MS Dhoni's captaincy in 2007.

India’s journey to being crowned as the T20 World Cup 2024 champions is nothing short of spectacular, facing a lot of heartbreak and criticism for failing to have a hand in the silverware despite being the top-class team.

Gautam Gambhir shares an emotional story amid the T20 World Cup 2024 win celebration

Well, India’s emotional yet incredible T20 World Cup win left every Indian emotional, but the emotions were different for the former Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir. While every Indian cricket fan and former cricketer was emotional with the team's historic win, Gambhir doesn’t have any such emotion.

However, Gambhir, who is likely to become Team India’s next head coach, felt proud of what Rohit Sharma and his team achieved on Caribbean soil, but he was not that emotional or crying at all. He also shared the reason behind his attitude with a surprising revelation that changed him.

Well, Gambhir's passion for cricket and his desire to win the World Cup for India were ignited at a very young age. The turning point came during a group match between India and Australia at the 1992 World Cup in Brisbane, which left a lasting impact on him. India lost by a narrow margin of one run, and this defeat deeply affected the then-11-year-old Gambhir.

I have never cried like that before or after that: Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda: “After seeing a match, I wanted to win the World Cup for India. I remember the 1992 India-Australia World Cup game in Brisbane, which India lost by one run, and I actually remember that I cried the entire night. I have never cried like that before or after that, and I don't know why.”

The former Indian batter was so affected by the defeat that he cried throughout the night, instilling in him a burning desire to one day win the World Cup for India. The specific incident of Venkatapathy Raju getting run out in the match remained etched in his memory.

However, after 19 years, Gambhir's childhood dream came true when he played a pivotal role in India's victorious 2011 World Cup campaign, but after that incident, he never cried or felt bad like that.

Gambhir added, “I was an 11-year-old at that time. I cried the entire night and said that I want to win the World Cup for India. I said that in 1992 and I was able to fulfill that dream in 2011. I would have felt unhappy before or after that match but I didn't used to cry like that.

I remember Venkatapathy Raju getting run out and India lost by one run. The match used to come early in the morning, so I used to watch that game after waking up at five in the morning, but I was never as sad before or after that game.”
