Emerging Indian spinner Sree Charani has been awarded the number one position on the latest ICC Women's T20I Bowler Rankings for his recent fiery bowling spells in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup for the Indian cricket team.
So far, only in 3 appearances in the title race, the 21-year-old spinner, who made his debut for the national women’s cricket team roughly a year ago, has claimed 10 wickets. Due to these incredible bowling numbers, the spinner has captured the top spot of the rankings, surpassing England spinner Linsey Smith, who drops to the number three position.
Sree Charani becomes No.1 for the first time in her career
Sree Charani kicked off his T20 World Cup journey by three wickets against the arch-rival Pakistan, followed by a 4-wicket haul against the Netherlands Women’s, and a three-wicket figure against a strong South Africa Women’s cricket team. With Charani on the side, India won against Pakistan and the Netherlands but felt short against South Africa.
“The 21-year-old only made her international debut a little over 12 months ago, but a second career four-wicket haul against the Netherlands in Leeds, followed by three more wickets in a loss to South Africa in Manchester, proved enough for Charani to take the top ranking from Smith following the latest update made by the ICC,” the International Cricket Council wrote this in an official statement on June 23.
There are other Indian bowlers as well in the bowlers' rankings
According to the current rankings, Sree Cahrani is ranked first with 753 points. England’s Charlie Dean, Linsey Smith, and Sophie Ecclestone are in second, third, and fourth spots, respectively, with 733, 726, and 722 ratings. Deepti Sharma, another Indian spinner, is in the top 10 with 708 points. Deepti slipped three ranks and is now in place at eight.
There are some changes in the rankings of the Women’s T20I batters as well. In the list of the batters for the Women’s T20I cricket, there are three Indian batters in the first ten ranks. Australian star keeper-batter Beth Mooney is top of the table with 782 ratings while South Africa’s Laura Woldaardt is just behind her, second, with 781 points.
Smriti Mandhana remains strong at the 5th spot with 749 points, and her teammate, Shafali Verma, is right next to her with 708 rating points. Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur takes one step ahead to claim the number ten spot with 653 rating points.
“Teammate Beth Mooney (up one spot to second) is her nearest challenger 47 rating points adrift, while Shafali Verma (up one slot to sixth), Harmanpreet Kaur (up one place to 10th), Sophie Devine (up one rung to 11th), Prendergast (up four places to 13th) and Nigar Sultana Joty (up three positions to 20th) are among the movers on the updated list for T20I batters,” ICC mentioned in the official website.
Deepti Sharma, the loan warrior
In the rankings for the Women’s T20 all-rounders, Deepti Sharma is the only all-rounder from the Women in Blue who is in the top 10, ranked 4th, with 364 points. West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthews is top of the rankings with 513 rating points.
