The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman of selectors, Ajit Agarkar, has made a massive statement on the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in international cricket.
Ajit Agarkar said that the final decision on whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be given a spot in the India squad for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 is yet to be made.
Like I said, they have been incredible players for a long time - Ajit Agarkar
A lot of things have been said about the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in international cricket, with many backing him to play till the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027 and some demanding their retirement.
However, now the person who holds the power and will decide the fate of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli has finally spoken on the matter. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, Ajit Agarkar said that Kohli and Rohit are currently part of the squad, but nobody knows what will happen in two years' time. He stated:
"They are part of the squad at the moment for Australia. Like I said, they have been incredible players for a long time. And it’s probably not the forum to keep harping on individuals because you want to try and focus on the team and what the team wants to achieve. And in two years' time, we don't know what the situation is going to be. Why only them? It could be some younger player too."
That would be a bit silly, isn't it? - Ajit Agarkar on putting Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma in pressure
Whether Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be judged on a match-to-match basis and will be kept under constant pressure? Ajit Agarkar responded to this, saying that it won't happen at all.
"That would be a bit silly, isn't it?" Agarkar said on being asked whether Kohli and Rohit would be assessed after every series. "When a guy averages over 50, and the other is close to it. You are not going to put them on trial for every game, but 2027 is a long way ahead. Both play one format. They are playing after what… 7 months. They haven't had a lot of cricket. Once they start playing, then you assess. They have achieved all they had to in terms of winning trophies, but also runs."
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently in Perth grinding hard on the ground to prepare themselves for a comeback to international cricket after a long time. They will be seen in action on Sunday, October 19, and will be hoping to score big runs in the three-match series.
It’s not that if both of them don’t get runs this series... - Ajit Agarkar
Ajit Agarkar also made it clear that the Australia series holds close to no importance regarding the selection of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. He said:
"It’s not that if both of them don’t get runs this series, that will be the reason they won’t be here. Or because they get 300 runs, that will be the reason. 2027 is still a long way ahead. We will see how the team shapes up. We have some ideas, and as we go along, we will see how the team is progressing."
While talking specifically about the legacy cricketers, Ajit Agarkar stated that they are treated with utmost respect and their conversations are kept private.
"Legacy cricketers have created that legacy for themselves. You'd rather have those experienced players playing well. You have to treat them with respect. Some of the conversations with them don't come out, but there is nothing but respect," he added.
