Auqib Nabi will have to wait longer to debut for the India National Cricket Team as the selectors announced the squad for the tour of Sri Lanka for the 2-match Test series without the best bowler of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season.
While the selectors choose spin bowling all-rounder like Saransh Jain, who was among the most successful off-spinners in the recent past across domestic tournaments, Nabi remained out of the fray for selection.
4 reasons why Auqib Nabi remains unselected for India's Test team
India already had enough fast-bowling options
Each selection stayed firm on rational grounds. The selection of the spinner Saransh Jain is because of the injured spinner Washington Sundar. If the selectors wanted to put Auqib Nabi into the team, then they would have to snub one of the frontline pacers of the recent Test set-up.
In the squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Gurnoor Brar are the four pacers who have been named. Bumrah, Siraj, and Krishna are experienced and proven pacers for the Indian cricket team, and Brar has been impressive since making his debut for the team in the format.
As all four existing pacers have valid reasons to be in the team, there is no way the selectors could include Auqib Nabi in the squad, despite his legitimate bowling performances for the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team across domestic tournaments.
Selectors still seem to value pace and physical attributes over domestic numbers alone
Swing and control over line and length, these two are the main tools in Auqib Nabi’s arsenal, which worked extremely well in the Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments, as domestic matches in India play across different grounds and different conditions.
Pace is something that is lacking in the J&K pacer’s bowling. The pacers, who recently played for the India National Cricket Team, whether it was Gurnoor Brar, Ashok Sharma, Prince Yadav or Mayank Yadav, are all capable of bowling over 140 cases constantly. Pace seems like to be a subject of concern for the national team selection nowadays.
IPL performances may have influenced perceptions
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked all of their contracted players to feature for their respective state cricket team to prioritize domestic cricket. Domestic tournaments, including the Ranji Trophy, remain one of the gateways to enter the national side, but not the only gateway.
If the selectors considered performance in the IPL 2026 as a parameter for selection, Nabi definitely did not fit the selectors’ plans. The 29-year-old pacer made his debut in the IPL in the previous season for the Delhi Capitals. As he recorded 60 wickets in 17 innings at 12.65 in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, expectations were high on him. But in the IPL, after playing 5 matches for the Capitals, Auqib Nabi was not able to take a single wicket and conceded an economy rate of 11.46.
India may simply have prioritized squad balance over rewarding domestic form
Balancing the squad is a crucial thing that the selectors had to do on paper while naming the candidates for the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka. Bumrah, Siraj, and Krishna are pure pacers, not pace-bowling all-rounders. The same can be said about Gurnoor Brar, as his batting skills are yet to be tested in internationals. The selection of Nabi could only have happened as a like-for-like substitution, a pacer in place of another pacer. Who should be sacrificed to make room for Auqib Nabi?
It is worth mentioning that Jasprit Bumrah’s chances to play the series remain uncertain as he is yet to prove his fitness. If Bumrah fails to regain his match fitness, then the selectors will have to make a change.
