Former India National Cricket Team cricketer Aakash Chopra opened up about his wishlist for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction. The cricketer-turned-commentator is in favor of the impact player and also wants a mega auction to take place every 5 years.
The focus is slowly moving towards the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The upcoming edition of the tournament will be having a mega auction, and the franchise owners had a meeting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Friday (31st July) to discuss the same.
The talking point of the meeting was about debates and discussions related to various retention policies and the Impact Player rule. Some of the owners also reportedly weren't keen on the mega auction ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025.
They reportedly highlighted that they need a bit of stability in the team and want rewards for scouting and backing young players who go on to become superstars. On the other hand, some franchises are in favor of mega auctions as they want a fresh set of players in the team for the upcoming editions.
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), after the meeting, also released an official statement, saying that they had a 'productive dialogue' with team owners over the preparations for IPL 2025 and that the IPL governing council will discuss the talking points from the meeting before taking the final call.
Aakash Chopra, however, is in favor of having a mega auction after every 5 years. He said that franchises will be getting a lot of opportunities in between to make changes, but a big auction after 5 years will allow them to prepare the core group. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:
"I am saying you can pull it to 5 years (on mega auction). You will get a lot of opportunities in between. If you want to do a little churning, you can do it. But to ensure that you have prepared the core and you want to keep it for the next 5-10 years, you should have the ability to do it. So, I would say that there should be mega auctions after every 5 year."
Aakash Chopra's wishlist for the IPL 2025 mega auction
Aakash Chopra shared the entire wishlist for the IPL 2025 mega auction. Apart from having a mega auction every 5 years, he wants BCCI to allow IPL franchises to retain 6 players and give them 2 RTM cards in the auction.
Aakash Chopra also wants a separate salary pool for domestic and uncapped players, saying that they should keep them separately. He stated:
"Domestic cricketers, the uncapped cricketers, you can keep them separately. So a franchise can hold them separately."
Aakash Chopra was also in favor of having an impact player rule for the IPL 2025, saying "Impact players. I think it should happen. I don't know if we will do it or not. I think it should happen."
Here is his wishlist:
1) Mega auction to take place once in 5 years.
2) Allow teams to retain 6 players.
3) 2 right-to-match cards per team.
4) Separate retention rules for uncapped players
5) The Impact Player rule should remain
