Legendary India batsman Sachin Tendulkar speaks about Rahul Dravid’s role as a coach on the upcoming tour to Sri Lanka.

India tour Sri Lanka for 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is from July 13 to 25; Dravid will fill in as a coach for Ravi Shastri, who would be England with the Test side at that time.

Sachin Tendulkar reckons a coach’s job is not just to teach the players to bat or bowl, which is something they would already know. But it to keep them in a healthy mental space and keep the environment of the dressing room fit. He further adds that someone like Dravid has spent time with the young players in the squad during his stint with the under-19 team and India A, which will help understand each other much better.

“These players have spent enough time with Rahul, so they know him. A coach is someone who should keep a healthy atmosphere in the team and the dressing room, and Rahul will do that. At this level, unless there are weaknesses, you don’t need to coach the players.

“They all know how to hit a cover drive or bowl an outswinger. When somebody is struggling, that’s when someone of his experience will play a role. Otherwise, the team knows what they are supposed to do,” Sachin Tendulkar told the Times of India.

Shikhar Dhawan has been around for 10 years: Sachin Tendulkar

Senior opener Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed the captain of the side as both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are in England. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is named as the vice-captain on the tour.

Sachin Tendulkar points out that Dhawan is an experienced player and has been around in international cricket for more than a decade now. The left-hander will lead a squad that has plenty of youngsters in it, and the 48-year-old former cricketer reckons would be exciting.

“Shikhar Dhawan has been around for 10 years. That’s a long enough period. The team is a nice mixture of experience and youth, and Rahul is around to help them without any doubt,” the batting maestro stated.
