Steven Smith has retired from ODI cricket, marking the end of a remarkable career as one of Australia's finest players. A regrettable incident in South Africa set his career back significantly. @stevesmith49 #SriLanka pic.twitter.com/8A3UouqXAR

Australian players are best in planning their retirements. They just know when to call it a day. Reason? I feel, most of their players tend to win one or 2 major titles in their prime. Sense of fulfilment means, not stretching of career. Thoughts? #IndvsAusSemifinal #INDvAUS…

Steve Smith's ODI records
Smith retires as one of the greats of ODI cricket. He scored 5800 runs in ODIs at an average of 43.28 and a strike rate of 86.96 with 12 hundreds and 35 fifties.
Apart from these numbers, he was also a part of two World Cup-winning teams for Australia. He was a part of 2015 ODI World Cup, which was played jointly in Australia and New Zealand. Michael Clarke was Australis's captain in this tournament.
Recently, he was a part of Australia's 2023 ODI World Cup-winning team, which was led by Pat Cummins. Smith played key roles in both the title wins. The match-winning hundred against India in the 2015 World Cup semi-final remains a golden moment of his ODI career.
A bitter end to a fantastic career
While it was a glittering career, Smith's ODI journey ended on a disappointing note as Australia lost to India in the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-finals to bow out of the tournament.
Smith was leading the team in this tournament in the absence of the regular captain Pat Cummins, who was ruled out due to injury. However, he led the inexperienced Australian team brilliantly and took them to the knockout stage.
He scored a fine 73 off 96 balls in his last ODI match which included 4 fours and 1 six. He looked at ease when was at the crease but was finally dismissed by Mohammed Shami off a dipping full toss.
His wicket proved to be the turning point for Australia as they failed to reach the final and were knocked out of the tournament.
