Amid the Indian National Cricket Team's jam-packed international fixtures, multiple discarded Indian batters have proved their worth in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2026-27. Rinku Singh is one of them and continues to remain in a purple patch for the Uttar Pradesh cricket team.
Singh, who is mostly known for his ability to play big shots in the T20 format, scored 112 runs against Goa in Rajgir in the ongoing campaign. In his last six matches in the Ranji Trophy, the batter got four hundred-plus-run knocks and a couple of fifty-plus-run knocks for Uttar Pradesh.
Aakash Chopra highlights Rinku Singh's form in First-Class cricket
Former Team India opener Aakash Chopra discussed how Rinku Singh has evolved as an all-format cricketer, not limiting himself only to white-ball formats. According to Aakash, Rinku is making a strong case to get his Test cap.
Rinku Singh's Last 6 Ranji Trophy Innings:
68 (131) vs Punjab
89 (110) vs Haryana
165* (173) vs Punjab
176 (247) vs Tamil Nadu
112 (168) vs Bihar
118 (186) vs Goa
No one is talking about Rinku Singh: Aakash Chopra
Sharing Singh's last six Ranji innings, the former cricketer stated that despite presenting one after another tremendous knocks in domestic cricket, especially in first-class cricket, no one is talking about Rinku.
"But no one is even talking about his name in Test Cricket. If you look at the history of first-class cricket, if you look at at least 50 innings, and then if you look at the players according to the average, then in the top 10, his name comes up again," Aakash Chopra reflected.
"But still no one is talking about Test Cricket. In fact, let's be fair, he is still a part of the World Cup-winning team. But after that, they don't even let him play in that team," he added.
As Aakash Chopra mentioned, Rinku has some brilliant stats in First-Class cricket with a batting average of 59.52 after scoring 3869 runs in 54 matches and 77 innings. In red-ball domestic cricket, the middle-order batter has registered 23 fifties and ten 100s.
Why did the selectors remove Rinku Singh from the team?
Aakash reckoned that Rinku made adjustments in his batting to stay relevant in the Indian cricket team, but all of his efforts went in vain as the selectors did not consider him eligible to play for the Men in Blue. The former cricketer felt that Rinku might have labelled himself as a white-ball batter; therefore, his chances to play for Team India became very limited. He played his last match for India against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club on July 26, 2026
"You were told to play below. Then you were shown the way out from below. Whenever there was batting upstairs, there was a little team fight; you scored the runs. Yes, he did score the runs. But despite that, he was not able to cement his place in this Indian team. And it feels like he has labelled it a bit," the former batter continued. Aakash opined.
