AB de Villiers has shared a shocking story of getting released by the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) franchise ahead of IPL 2011. AB de Villiers revealed that he was told he will be retained by the franchise for the next edition. However, he was surprised when he was released by the franchise a few weeks later.
AB de Villiers was part of Delhi Daredevils in the first three editions of the Indian Premier League. He was part of the team before getting released by ultimately being picked by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL 2011 auction.
It Came As A Surprise When I Learnt I Was Released: AB de Villiers
While speaking on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers revealed how he was released by Delhi Daredevils even after being assured of getting retained.
“I got called into the office and was told – ‘you are going to get retained young AB de Villiers’. So it came as a surprise when I learnt I was released, a few weeks later. Communication wasn’t great back then,” De Villiers said.
The right-handed batter also added how RCB picked him in the IPL 2011 auction after his good show in international cricket. He also said that getting picked by RCB changed his life forever.
“A lot of doubts crept up in my mind but I kept playing good cricket in internationals. Luckily for me, the auction happened and I got picked up by RCB. It changed my life forever, so great memories,” de Villiers further said.
De Villiers gave a good performance for Delhi Daredevils in his first three IPL seasons too. However, due to the mega auction in 2011, the team parted ways with him. Villiers became a part of RCB in IPL 2011 and the team reached the finals, ending up as runners-up.
He was retained by RCB till his retirement from all forms of cricket after IPL 2021. The South African stalwart also became a poster boy for RCB along with Virat Kohli, with whom he shares a cordial friendship.
