The powerhouse striker from the Caribbean, Andre Russell, has been released from the Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction. Former Indian cricketer has pinned the blame for this release on the newly appointed KKR head coach, Abhishek Nayar.

Andre Russell has been an exceptional cricketer in the IPL, as he has played for so many years in the IPL. He has been playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders for 11 years now, since arriving in the Knight Riders camp back in 2014.

Andre Russell announced his retirement from T20Is this year, as the 37-year-old cricketer went on to amass 2600 runs, while he also picked 122 wickets for the franchise over these years. He was named the Most Valuable Player for KKR twice in 2015 and 2019.

"But as coaches change, they bring some changes." Mohammad Kaif's massive statement on Abhishek Nayar

Russell was known to have a huge impact on KKR's setup. However, after his release, former Indian batter Mohammed Kaif feels things might not have changed had Abhishek Nayar not been appointed as the new head coach.

“Russell’s release is not right. You had him at 12 crore, and that is not a big amount, really, for a player like him. He is a once-in-a-generation player. Yes, he was out of form, but later on he scored runs too. But as coaches change, they bring some changes. I think this was a big call," said Mohammad Kaif.

Mohammad Kaif further claimed that the direct reason behind the release of Andre Russell was the appointment of Abhishek Nayar as head coach. Nayar is probably willing to mould his own side.

“You can say he was not at his peak, but I feel this is such a format, especially in the IPL, where experienced players do well, and there are many examples. I feel the straight answer to his release is Abhishek Nayar. He wants to make his own team now. But this was an astonishing call,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

KKR is not likely to find Russell's replacement in the mini-auction

After having released a player of Andre Russell's calibre, Mohammad Kaif revealed that despite their huge purse, they might not be able to draw a player of Russell's calibre.

“The quality and power that Russell has, even four players like Cameron Green cannot cover that. The way he plays, he can hit 100m sixes as per will, and he has won them so many games from situations where the game seemed lost. He got that respect because of this ability. There are very few players like him at number seven," noted Mohammad Kaif.

“If you play Green at seven, he cannot score even half the runs of Russell, he bats up the order. I feel they should buy Russell back,” added Kaif.

Can KKR buy back Andre Russell in the mini-auction?

This has been a clear message that Andre Russell is expecting a move on from his former franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders. He was released after being bought for INR 12 crores ahead of the mega-auction.

KKR still has both overseas spots as well as a huge purse. They ca have the services of Andre Russell back, but this time at a cost lower than before. However, CSK has been revealed to be already in line for the veteran all-rounder ahead of the mini-auction.
