Abhishek Sharma reveals India’s simple plan for Gold Medal clash against Pakistan at Asian Games 2026
There have always been huge expectations when it comes to the India vs. Pakistan match, but Abhishek Sharma revealed that the Indian players did not want to think too much about the opposition. His plan was simple: to treat the final like another cricket match and play according to the situation.
The Indian opener further explained that he wanted to attack anything that came into his hitting area during the powerplay. Abhishek also believed that a strong start could put India in a powerful position early in the game against the Pakistan team.
Abhishek Sharma was quoted as saying by Revsportz, "Whenever we win for India, it's a proud feeling. Our plan was to play just another match. In pressure situations, you should play normally. In the powerplay, whichever ball is in my area, I will utilize it fully, no matter who the bowler is. If we bat better in the powerplay, half of the game can be over.”
This approach worked perfectly as the Punjab lad smashed 61 runs from just 28 balls. His attacking innings gave India the flying start they needed in the final against the Men in Green.
Pakistan made India work hard, says Abhishek
Even after scoring 211 runs, India faced pressure with the ball. Pakistan produced a strong middle-order fight thanks to Hasan Nawaz’s 96 and built a partnership that lasted longer than India expected in the gold medal clash at the Asian Games 2026.
Abhishek admitted that Pakistan’s batting made the defense more difficult, but the team was confident in the bowling attack. Amid this, “Saturday ho ya Sunday…”: Irfan Pathan trolls Pakistan after Asian Games final loss to India.
The Indian spinners Washington Sundar and Axar Patel and fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah delivered strongly under pressure and helped the team win the game by 19 runs.
The Punjab lad added, “They also did a very good batting in the middle overs. We were not expecting that the partnership would last so long. But at last, in the death overs, I feel our spinners and Jassi Bhai did a very good job. Credit goes to them.”
Abhishek Sharma opens up about special Asian Games experience
Abhishek revealed that he travelled across Japan and enjoyed being part of the Asian Games 2026. However, the weather was a big challenge for the players. Heavy rain made outdoor practice almost impossible, but the support staff found ways to keep the players ready.
He added, “It was a lot of fun, sir. I got to travel all over Japan. It rains 24 hours a day. So, as a player, it is important to keep yourself in the game zone whenever there is a crucial match like this.”
He praised the team’s trainer and physio for their work during this period and said their efforts helped India maintain momentum throughout the tournament.
Abhishek Sharma reveals what winning Gold for India really means
Abhishek further said that representing India is always a proud feeling. He noted that seeing the Indian flag rise after winning gold made the occasion even more special.
The Indian opener added, “Whenever we play a match for India, and when the flag goes up, I feel the motivation that comes from within. We feel happy that we are representing India and doing so well. We feel the same today as well.”
With cricket set to feature at the LA Olympics in 2028, Abhishek wants India to focus on one step at a time rather than looking too far ahead. He signed off by saying, “It is still a long way. So, there are small steps.”
