Pakistan mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed has found himself in a difficult situation, giving a fresh headache to SRH owner Kavya Maran. The leg-spinner could soon have to choose between representing Pakistan in Test cricket and playing for his franchise in England's The Hundred.
Both the Hundred and Test series are set to clash, creating a major problem for Abrar. If the spinner is selected for Pakistan's Test squad against the West Indies, he is likely to miss The Hundred 2026. Amid this, SRH owner Kavya Maran set to marry Anirudh? Family drops big hint.
Pakistan's Test series and The Hundred clash creates major problem for Abrar Ahmed
As reported by Telecom Asia Sport, Abrar Ahmed is facing a country-versus-franchise situation. Pakistan will play a two-match Test series against the West Indies from July 25 to August 7, while The Hundred 2026 is set to be held from July 21 to August 16.
Since both tournaments almost entirely clash, Abrar may have to miss either the West Indies vs Pakistan Test series or the 100-ball tournament in England. The report said that Abrar and his agent are waiting for Pakistan's squad announcement before taking any decision.
Sources were quoted as saying by Telecom Asia Sport: “Abrar and his agent are in a fix because if he is selected for the Test team to play in the West Indies, it will affect his participation in The Hundred, which will start four days before the first Test.”
Kavya Maran's signing of Abrar Ahmed had sparked huge controversy
If the leg-spinner is picked for the West Indies tour, he would miss a large part of the upcoming The Hundred 2026. Abrar was bought by Sunrisers Leeds for 190,000 pounds (around ₹2.3 crore). The franchise is owned by Kavya Maran, and his signing had created a huge controversy in India.
Many fans criticized the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) owner on social media for signing a Pakistani player. The controversy became even bigger after reports claimed that Kavya herself was actively involved in the bidding process to bring Abrar to the team.
Sunrisers Leeds are hoping Abrar Ahmed is available for The Hundred
The report further said that people close to Abrar's agent believe it would be a big disappointment if he were unable to play in The Hundred.
They feel the franchise continued with the signing despite facing heavy criticism, so they would naturally want Abrar to be available for the English tournament.
Sources added, “Sunrisers Leeds owner has faced backlash from 140 billion people and has resisted that, so it will be imperative that Abrar plays in The Hundred.”
Abrar Ahmed's Test selection could trigger fresh drama
Well, Pakistan's national selection committee is expected to announce the squad for the two-Test series on Monday. Abrar is likely to be considered because the selectors are looking for a leg-spinner who can make an impact against the West Indies.
Notably, India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks and now meet only in ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup. Pakistani players have also not been part of the IPL since the first season in 2008. Indian-owned franchises have generally avoided signing Pakistan players in overseas leagues as well.
However, Sunrisers Leeds signed Abrar after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) made it clear that Pakistani players could not be excluded from The Hundred.
